Approximately 5-10% of all cancer cases are linked to inherited genetic defects.

The lifestyle factors that contribute to cancer include cigarette smoking, diet, alcohol, sun exposure, environmental pollutants, infections, stress, obesity, and physical inactivity

While hereditary factors cannot be modified, lifestyle and environmental factors can be modified to reduce the risk of cancer

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ENVIRNMENTAL FACTORS THAT CAUSE CANCER?

There are some things that can cause cancer. These include viruses, bacteria, radiation, chemicals and what we eat.

Some dangerous chemicals are benzene, asbestos, vinyl chloride, radon and arsenic.

Things like smoking and the air or water we breathe can also increase our risk of getting cancer.

Other possible causes of cancer are fluoride in water, radiation from power lines or electronics and chemicals in products we use every day such as makeup or cleaning supplies but these haven’t been proven yet to cause cancer for sure.

It is important to try to limit our exposure to these things so that we don’t get sick with cancer later on in life!

How can one reduce their exposure to environmental carcinogens?

There are several ways to reduce exposure to environmental carcinogens. One way is to be informed about what may be harmful by checking out a list of environmental concerns and chemicals.

Another way is to limit exposure to known carcinogens such as quitting smoking, limiting sun exposure, limiting alcohol drinking, or having HPV and HBV vaccination.

Exposure to carcinogens may occur in the workplace, or in the wider environment through air, water, or soil pollution

Regulations have been put in place to reduce exposures to known carcinogens in the workplace.

Some chemical carcinogens are well known and exposure is preventable, such as chemicals in asbestos or tobacco smoke.

Eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains is a good way to lower your risk of getting cancer from food. Don’t eat processed or red meats too often, don’t drink too much alcohol, and don’t char or overcook your food. Additionally, it is important to be aware of food additives and preservatives that may be carcinogenic and to read food labels carefully.

What are some alternative foods to eat to avoid carcinogens?

To stay safe from cancer, eat lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Broccoli, cauliflower and kale are special because they can help protect you from cancer. Beans, nuts and seeds can also help – Avoid artificial sweeteners, salty foods, cured foods and fried foods to stay away from cancer risk.

Eat healthier things like fresh fruits, veggies and grains instead!

According to various sources, a diet rich in plant-based foods can help lower the risk of cancer. Here are some of the top foods that may help prevent cancer:

  • Berries
  • Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables
  • Tomatoes
  • Whole grains like brown rice, wild rice, and quinoa
  • Nuts like walnuts

Grow your own collard & mustard greens, tomatoes, herbs, and being conscious of the planting soil we use.  I know we all have busy lives and are looking for quick, already made foods, but we’ve got to show our bodies some love.  Our body works HARD for us each and every day!!
