As a parent of young children, you may often feel like there are too many activities vying for your attention and that no matter how hard you try, it’s impossible to fit them all in. But one activity that is essential when nurturing our children’s growth is instilling the importance of learning from our past generations. From reading books at home or going to the library together, to being physically active outdoors – these formative experiences can have meaningful impacts on kids’ futures. Reading and physical activity both provide important opportunities for kids to explore and discover something beyond what their parents teach them — unlocking the history behind why we do things the way we do; revealing original stories and perspectives which will shape their developing minds through knowledge gained over time.
The Value of Reading to Our Children and Taking Them to the Library
Reading to our children and taking them to the library are some of the best ways to instill a love of literature in them from an early age. Not only does reading aloud help children develop their language and literacy skills, but it also fosters a strong connection and bond between parent and child. The library is a treasure trove of books and resources that can help expand their knowledge and imagination, both of which are crucial components of a child’s intellectual growth. Plus, a trip to the library can be an exciting adventure that exposes children to different cultures, perspectives, and experiences. So why not make reading and visiting the library a regular part of your family routine? You just might find that it’s a fun and rewarding way to spend time with your little ones.

Encouraging the Growth of Their Minds Through Exploration

As parents, we all want what’s best for our children. We want them to grow up to be happy, successful, and fulfilled adults. One important way we can help encourage their growth is by fostering their sense of exploration. Children are naturally curious, and by giving them opportunities to explore their world, we can help them grow their minds and foster a love of learning that will stay with them throughout their lives. Whether it’s taking them on nature walks, reading books together, or simply encouraging them to ask questions and learn more about the world around them, the more we can do to encourage exploration, the more we can help our kids grow into the best possible versions of themselves.
Teaching them What We Grew Up With – Keeping History Alive
As we get older and reminisce on our childhood, we often feel a sense of nostalgia for the things that formed our earliest memories. It can be hard to imagine a world where a younger generation does not appreciate the music, movies, and pop culture icons that we grew up with. But as educators, it’s our responsibility to keep the flame of history alive, and to ensure that our children understand the significance of our shared cultural heritage. By teaching them about the music, movies, and important figures that shaped our youth, we can pass on a love of history that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives. Let us take joy in teaching them what we grew up with, and keep history alive for generations to come. And I mention this because of technology and how fast it is taking over our lives!
I used to drive a Dodge Neon, before buying a Toyota Hybrid (had it for 7 years now). My Dodge Neon had roll up windows, and as I was rolling up my window a little boy was on his bike and watched with amazement at me rolling my window up. When I finished and was getting out of my car, the little boy said, “Awh, that’s Cool”! I was shocked that he had not seen anything like it. It was funny to me, but still shocking. For me, It was a requirement to have push button windows. If I say anything about a dial up phone, kids will not know what I’m talking about. A pager, a record player or a VHS….they won’t know. Many of these old products have been replaced with technology and the children only know the newest technology. It’s important for them to know that the cell phone they are looking at movies on, didn’t start out with you being able to watch movies on. Let’s share our history with them.
How to Be Physically Active and Explore Nature

Exploring nature while being physically active can be a great way to stay healthy and have fun at the same time. There are so many opportunities to be active while experiencing the beauty of nature. We have gotten away from family camping trips where you can cook your breakfast outside amongst nature. And catching the fish for your dinner while camping. I think it’s good to mix up the activities and get a balance of indoor and outdoor activities. Whether it’s hiking in the mountains, kayaking in a lake, or biking along a scenic trail, roller skating at the park, there are countless ways to enjoy the outdoors while getting some exercise. Plus, being out in nature can be incredibly therapeutic and refreshing for the mind, body, and soul. Just be sure to bring plenty of water, wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and always respect the environment around you. So why not grab a friend or family member or a couple families and do group camping, and explore the great outdoors together? Your body and mind will thank you.
Benefits of Unplugging from Technology and Connecting with Others

In today’s world, it’s all too easy to get lost in a sea of screens. We spend our days scrolling through social media feeds, responding to work emails, and binge-watching shows on Netflix. While technology has its benefits, it’s important to take a step back every once in a while and unplug. By disconnecting from technology and connecting with others, we can reap a whole host of benefits. For one, we can improve our communication and social skills by interacting face-to-face with those around us. We can also reduce stress and improve our mental health by taking a break from the constant bombardment of information.
It’s all about making time for things that bring us happiness, whether it’s revisiting a favorite childhood activity or discovering a new hobby. Perhaps it’s expressing ourselves through art, playing board games like chess or Mancala, or playing a game of hopscotch with friends. Whatever it may be, the memories and emotions of childhood can still be experienced and cherished in our adult lives. So, let’s embrace the child within us and find ways to bring joy into our everyday routines along with our children’s lives. After all, life is too short to not have a little fun.
As we transition into a more virtual world and our children grow with more technology, it is important to remember the joys of childhood that come from growing up free of technology. Reading to children and taking them to the library open their minds to new ideas and explorations. By interacting with nature and engaging in activities together we can give our kids a sense of the history that they may not have in an entirely digital world. Let’s take this time to unplug from technology, give our children the value of connecting with others and prepare them for their future by teaching them what we grew up with as it will shape their lives positively for many years ahead. It’s time to explore nature, re-connect with people and appreciate the beautiful moments that life has to offer.
I would like to mention a new children’s short story book recently published for toddlers ages 2-5. It’s my first book on Amazon that centers around learning that everyone has superpowers, community and friendship with Kerri and her Animal friends. Check it out, titled, “The Unexpected Hero: Discovering One’s True Power to Save The Day!” If you like this blog, feel free to share it with family and friends and Subscribe so you don’t miss anything!!
